Summer Theme: Jesus' Short Stories-The Parables
I love a good story, don’t you?
Our mid-summer series focuses on the short stories of Jesus that we call parables. The classic definition of a parable is “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.” That is a pretty good way to think of the nearly forty parables found in Matthew, Mark & Luke. (There are no parables in John’s Gospel account.)
There is a resurgence of the story-telling-art in our culture, but Jesus’ stories were different. Their purpose was above and beyond the story itself. He used these stories as memorable ways to tell us something important about the Kingdom of God that he came to establish. That Kingdom was unlike anything on earth.
We pray that you see his Kingdom as never before as we consider some of “Jesus’ Short Stories” in the weeks to come.
2010 Theme:"Sitting at Jesus' Feet"
“SITTING AT JESUS’ FEET” is our theme for 2010. While Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” will be a major topical factor in our corporate worship environment, there will be even more than we can gain from “sitting at Jesus’ feet” and paying attention to his teaching (the “red letter” words in many Bibles.) The goal is not just “listening” to his words, but also becoming more of a “doer” of his Word.
Those ideas can lead us in several directions as the year unfolds, but besides the Sermon on the Mount, possibilities include some questions for and from Jesus, as well as a study in a book though to be from the pen of his half-brother, James—one who was intent on helping us see the “doing” part of our faith.
